The planning view
Bali is a single Indonesian island small enough to cross in a day on paper and slow enough in practice that most trips work better from two bases than from one. The south (Canggu, Seminyak, Uluwatu) is the beach-and-surf side and the busiest. Ubud, inland and roughly an hour north, is the rice-terrace, temple and walking base. The east and north-east (Amed, Sidemen, Candidasa) are markedly quieter and better suited to a second, slower week. Traffic — not distance — is the main planning constraint: routes that look like 30 km can take well over an hour.
Where the trip is spent
Ubud and the uplands
Rice terraces, river valleys and temple walks. Best used as a slow base rather than a day trip from the coast.
The southern coast
Surf breaks, clifftop sunsets around Uluwatu, and the densest concentration of cafés and restaurants.
East Bali and the islands
Amed and Sidemen for quiet; Nusa Penida and the Gilis for short boat-based add-ons.
Getting there
Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), near Denpasar in the south. Direct flights operate from Dubai; typical flying time from the UAE is around nine hours.

Practical notes
- Rainy season runs roughly November to March, with heavy but usually short downpours.
- Allow far more road time than the map suggests, especially between the south and Ubud.
