The planning view

Morocco rewards a route rather than a single base. Marrakech and Fez are the two classic city anchors — Fez for the older, denser medina, Marrakech for access to the Atlas and the desert. Between and around them sit the High Atlas passes, the Dadès and Todra gorges, and the Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga dune fields. The Atlantic coast (Essaouira) and the blue-washed Rif town of Chefchaouen are common softeners between long driving days. Most itineraries fail on pace, not on choice: desert loops from Marrakech involve full days on mountain roads in each direction.

Where the trip is spent

Fez and Marrakech medinas

Two very different old cities. Two nights minimum each; a guided first morning saves a lot of disorientation.

High Atlas crossings

Tizi n'Tichka and the valleys beyond. Scenic, slow, and the reason desert loops need realistic day lengths.

Sahara dune fields

Erg Chebbi is the more accessible; Erg Chigaga is remoter and needs an extra day each way.

Getting there

Marrakech Menara (RAK), Casablanca Mohammed V (CMN) and Fez–Saïss (FEZ) are the usual entry points. Flying time from the UAE is roughly eight hours direct to Casablanca.

Routes, schedules and flying times change. VistaVoyages does not sell or reserve flights, accommodation or transfers.

Practical notes

  • Ramadan dates shift each year and change opening hours and restaurant rhythms — worth checking before fixing dates.
  • Desert nights are cold outside summer; layers matter even on a hot itinerary.
  • Entry requirements and vaccinations vary by nationality — check official government sources.
